Windrush at 75: poetic unity comes to tiny brixton

This Thursday (22nd June), Tiny Brixton will partner with Poetic Unity to host an intimate evening poetry and spoken word in response to the themes of Windrush and its legacy in Brixton.

“Windrush Day has become a key symbolic moment in the story of the Black British contribution to this country and the broader post-war migration from across the Commonwealth and beyond that helped create the modern Britain that we share today.”

As we approach the 75th Anniversary of the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush in 1948, Tiny Brixton and Poetic Unity will be playing a small part the nationwide series of events and programmes which recognise and celebrate this historic moment and its lasting influence on modern Britain.

“Poetic Unity brings together a huge range of talented young poets at different levels of their artistry. It provides an inclusive space where first time performers, up and coming as well as seasoned poets are able to share one stage.”

Poetic Unity is a South London charity who works with young people of the local community to develop their self-expression and confidence through poetry. Over the last 8 years, the charity has hosted over a thousand workshops and programmes with young people from all across the borough.

Windrush Voices will consist of performances of poetry and spoken word which interpret the legacy of Windrush from the perspective of the younger generation. We’re expecting a sincerely moving evening which fuses creativity, history and community right here in the heart of South London.

Tickets are available to the general public by following the link below.
