The Raw Sounds team lead a workshop about supporting participants with mental health needs for the Challenging Circumstances Music Network [http://www.sound-connections.org.uk/what-we-do/training-and-development/challenging-circumstances-network] last week. The training day covered a range of topics, from the complex needs of participants and fluidity of diagnosis, to navigating services and applying youth work values. The workshop received extremely positive feedback, and Sound Connections have commissioned a briefing paper from the team so as to share this knowledge throughout the sector.

Raw Sounds presented their new work to a packed house at at Brixton’s POW club on Tuesday December 1st. Hosted by Infecta and Floetic Lara Lee. the 3 hour show was a stunning succession of musical talent from the mental health programme that fosters musicians and artists through weekly participatory music workshops, instrument tuition and studio sessions. Linked to our work in hospitals and on the wards, the project breaks down stigma and isolation and enables people to interact and participate in an open and creative setting.

Comic Relief and Lloyds Bank Foundation has awarded our Raw Sounds mental health programme another 3 years of funding! This is fantastic news and will enable us to keep this essential service going in Lambeth. We have reached full capacity with over 400 referrals and around 60 people attending our weekly sessions which now include Raw Basics, instrument lessons for service users, funded by the People’s Health Trust fund.

MUSICABILMENTE FESTIVAL ITALY 1-2 August

Raw Sounds arrived in Milan and headed up into the mountains for the Musicabilmente festival in Chamois 2800 metres high- straight up in a cable car as there is no road! The first day we were all in the clouds and rain, but the festival still kicked off with performances by CLG ensemble, Fulmine in linea retta (Lighting in a straight line) and Raw Sounds. The music went from improvised abstract sounds with heavy percussion, to a mass band of djembes and guitars – then to Raw Sounds set of original tunes from band members Shakira, Sheba and Tagz, with musicians Will, James, Mike, Joe and Tim.

The day ended with a two hour late night improvisation set from the combined band members joined by with CLG’s Ramon and celebrity jazz horn player Giorgio Li Calzi on trumpets  and Tim Brown on flute. The following day the sun was blazing over the crystal clear mountain tops and the day got off to a beautiful start with a conference led by Raw Material on mental health and music work. Different approaches and methods were shared by all and the groups clearly had a lot in common in approach and in the issues we all have to deal with in equalities, inclusion and access. In the afternoon a large crowd gathered for the show which bought the house down with star performances and a mass improvised jam performed by all three groups. A great success to end the day. Raw Sounds left Chamois with a feeling of having accomplished what they set out to do- play some great music, engage with the Italian groups and set in motion a new partnership. Congratulations to all and we especially thank the Chamois Insieme Association, organisers Laura and Gigi Strocchi, Enrico de Palmas, the sound crew and all the helpers and volunteers and for Hannah, Joe and Mike for getting Raw Sounds there and back, Mike for translating everything and to our wonderful EU Croatian partner Jelena Batelic for coming all the way to Italy and being part of our group and providing her support to the project. A great success to end the day and all broadcast on national Italian TV.

The Chamois festival continues this week with the international jazz festival organised by Giorgio Calzi.
