You’re invited to the Raw Sounds end of term showcase!

Participants to Raw Material’s mental health programme have been producing new and original music over the course of ten weeks, and will be heading to Brixton Jamm to put on a show, featuring artists from both our community and our young people’s programmes.

We’ve got an earlier start time than usual, so come along at 6pm and come hungry as we’ll have our usual dose of delicious hot food from Refill.

We are recruiting an experienced project manager (part time job share, 6-month contract April – September 2017), for our mental health programme Raw Sounds. The successful candidate will have a background in working with young people with complex needs, will not only have excellent administration skills but will also have experience as a group facilitator. We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic and enthusiastic individual who is a keen advocate for access to culture, as part of a job share with an existing project manager.

 

About Raw Sounds:

Raw Sounds is a programme of music and creative media sessions for people with moderate to severe mental health needs, accessing mental health services. Participants are able to work with experienced and skilful musicians to create original, professional music.

Sessions take place in our community music studios in Brixton, which houses two recording studios, a band rehearsal space, a production suite and DJ booth spread over three floors. Participants attend weekly sessions on a Thursday for 10 weeks per term to create an original track or series of tracks, culminating in a live performance at the end of term gig at a commercial music venue. Up to 20 participants attend each two-hour session per week on a Thursday, spread across each music making area, meeting for a group intro and feedback session, led by the programme manager. We also run four music tuition groups during the day on a Monday. We run three terms per year, and once referred participants are able to come for as long as they are so inclined. Committed members are encouraged to progress onto our mentoring scheme or artists’ development programme and work towards an Arts Award qualification.

The role of the project manager is to support young people to attend and participate in our sessions, from the point of referral through mental health services through to progression beyond our programme. Working with a job share partner who manages sessions for older participants the successful candidate will support with a range of management and administrative duties such as line managing a pool of freelance musicians, liaising with mental health services and reporting to funders.

 

Specific duties

Supporting participants

  • Assess and interview referrals from care coordinators, mental health services and hospitals.
  • Liaise with care coordinators to update on progress and any concerns.
  • Support participants who have a variety of mental health needs to attend sessions, keeping track of their progress and additional support needs.
  • Communicate with clients between sessions including support calls and reminders.
  • Support participants with personal and musical development during sessions, including pathways through and beyond the project into mainstream education and employment opportunities.

Managing sessions

  • Organise and work with staff to plan the programme, oversee delivery, monitor and evaluate sessions and participants’ progress.
  • Manage the delivery of weekly sessions for up to 20 young people (under 30) taking place on a Thursday evening, including pre-brief and de-brief with staff and participants, dealing with complex group dynamics.
  • Oversee delivery of four instrument tuition groups on a Monday, reporting back any concerns from staff about participants to their care teams.
  • Manage incidents during sessions and ensure the code of conduct and safeguarding, manage risk and health and safety policy and practices are implemented.
  • Organise induction, training and support for volunteers and staff.
  • Provide regular staff supervision and identify development areas.
  • Coordinate and manage volunteers.
  • Co-produce regular showcase events at local music venues with participants three times a year.

Finance and administration

  • Complete project monitoring and evaluation forms, and collect quantitative and qualitative data for reports to funders.
  • Fill in commitment logs to monitor project spend and freelancer invoices.
  • Contribute to reports to funders two to four times per year.

 

Essential requirements

  • Substantial project management experience.
  • Three years experience in working with young people with complex needs, and an understanding of the services that support them.
  • The willingness to invest time to build a genuine rapport with hard to reach young people.
  • Training in mentoring and supporting vulnerable young people.
  • Experience and training in implementing and maintaining Safeguarding, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults polices and best practices.
  • Awareness of the Mental Health Act.
  • Excellent organisational and communications skills both verbal and written.
  • Good skills in Microsoft Office and excellent administrative abilities.
  • Good knowledge of contemporary music genres.
  • Current enhanced DBS.

 

Desirable

  • Youth work qualification.
  • Music skills (such as DJing, music production, singing, rapping etc).
  • Knowledge of a wide range of contemporary music genres.

 

Hours and rate of pay

6 month contract (April – September 2017).

12 hours per week, Mondays 11.30am – 4.30pm & Thursdays 1pm-8pm

Rate of pay: Freelance, £20 per hour

Some of these young people have a high level of support need – some are currently living on hospital wards, and may have low levels of literacy skills or learning difficulties. The producer will work with a group of up to five young people, encouraging them to collaborate on a track, showing them how to structure lyrics, creating a beat in response to their ideas, recording the tunes and preparing them for the end of term gig.

Up to 20 participants attend each two-hour session per week, spread across each music making area, meeting for a group intro and feedback session. Staff meet before and after each session for briefings and feedback led by the programme managers.

 

Role Description:

We are recruiting an experienced music producer with a background in youth work to deliver studio sessions to our group of 16-30 year olds with mental health needs. Some of these young people have a high level of support need – some are currently living on hospital wards, and may have low levels of literacy skills or learning difficulties. The producer will work with a group of up to five young people, encouraging them to collaborate on a track, showing them how to structure lyrics, creating a beat in response to their ideas, recording the tunes and preparing them for the end of term gig. An important aspect to this role is setting boundaries and ensuring the safety and comfort of all the participants, including monitoring lyrics to ensure they are appropriate.

This work takes place on Thursday evenings from 5-8pm, 36 weeks per year. We are looking for someone who is able to commit to a year contract starting 19th January 2016, with a probationary review after 12 weeks. Consistency is extremely important to our participants, so we expect the candidate to be reliable, organized and professional. Work in this environment is intense, and the right candidate will have the ability to maintain clear boundaries, have a lot of experience with working with young people in challenging circumstances, and the ability to multitask under pressure.

In addition to this role, there is an opportunity for the candidate to work additional hours 1:1 with participants to deliver Arts Award over a series of consecutive weeks on a Monday or Friday at a time convenient to both participant and producer, overseen by the programme manager.

Raw Sounds staff are supported and line managed by the programme managers, who oversee all aspects of the programme and support staff in areas of development and provide training in working with our client group. They act as the point of contact between mental health services and delivery staff, to ensure any concerns around participants’ mental state are reported and all participants are able to operate in a safe and stable environment.

 

Specific duties

  • Work with young people with moderate to high mental health needs to produce and record music in our studios.
  • Support young people with a high level of need to write lyrics and construct music independently.
  • Work within a team of seven freelancers to ensure high quality music sessions for groups of up to 20 young people per week.
  • Feedback on participants’ progress, development and support needs to the Raw Sounds Programme Managers.
  • Support young people to set goals and work towards a plan as regards their musical development.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants, feeding back concerns quickly to programme managers
  • Make sure each young person attending a session feels included and supported to work towards a piece of music at their own pace during the term.
  • Support young people’s wellbeing by building skills in confidence, resilience, agency and self-esteem.
  • Manage the studio during sessions and ensure equipment is in good working condition, reporting back any faults to the Tech Manager.

 

Essential requirements

  • Excellent skills using Logic software package and plug ins and recording studio gear.
  • Ability to produce music in a wide variety of styles – grime, trap and hip hop in particular – quickly, and in collaboration with young people.
  • 2 years experience in youth work and relevant training.
  • Extensive experience working with young people with a range of complex needs.
  • Thorough understanding of Safeguarding, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults polices and best practices.
  • An up-to-date enhanced DBS.
  • Excellent organisational and communications skills.

 

Desirable

  • Trained as an Arts Award Advisor to Gold Level
  • Experience of delivering Arts Award to young people facing challenging circumstances
  • Experience of supporting young people with mental health needs.

 

Hours and rate of pay

The post requires 2 hours per week of contact time with clients and 1 hour per week of admin 36 weeks per year.

Hours per week: 3            Rate of pay: £20 per hour              £60 per week x 36 weeks
Salary: £2,160

Additional sessions delivering Arts Award are paid at the same rate.

This month, participants to our mental health programme Raw Sounds have been collaborating on a photography project with Photofusion.

Building a pop-up photo-booth in the park next door to Raw Material, participants have learnt skills in photography – using SLR cameras, screens and light reflectors to create a unique image. For the next two weeks, we will be heading to Photofusion’s high tech studio to edit these images, working with collage techniques to turn our photos into album covers for music produced during Raw Sounds sessions.

This project is part of Connect and Discover at Morley College.

Participants to Raw Material’s mental health programme, Raw Sounds, performed a fantastic show at POW last night. With a real variety of genres, from hip hop to reggae to metal, the new and original music produced over the past 12 weeks of the programme is of exceptional quality. We are very proud to be able to facilitate a creative community of young people and adults who support each other to express difficult feelings through music, and applaud those who took the plunge and performed on stage for the first time.

As Raw Sounds grows, our programme develops – from humble beginnings, we now have three weekly community workshops, a service touring hospital wards and artist mentoring scheme. Next week, participants and staff will gather for an evaluation session, to discuss where we go from here…
